#49 – OLD BLOCK ISLAND IS A CALLIN’

#49 -OLD BLOCK ISLAND IS A CALLIN'

We picked out our beach rental, sent in the deposit and reserved our spot on the ferry! That’s how it works in New England.  If you want  your best chances at an awesome summer house, you look into rentals in February.  That’s ok. Because February is by far the coldest month of the year. Browsing rentals, looking at all the big plots of farm land, the pristine beaches, the old Victorian homes….ah, it takes me away for a moment.

That is when I got the idea for this Block Island Ferry doodle. In POST #10- ODE TO THE ORANGE

https://becreativemary.wordpress.com/2013/01/10/10-ode-to-the-orange/

I had used Payne’s Gray for the background. I had felt like there was too much space above the Doritos bag and so I cropped off the top of the painting.  I couldn’t bring myself to throw away this 5×12 inch piece of scrap and so it has lingered with all of my supplies for well over a month.

But today was the day.  I had Block Island on my mind and boy, that scrap piece of paper sure looked like ocean to me!  I chose the ferry leaving the Port of Galilee in Narragansett RI because this is close to where I take my kids to the beach all summer.  We live on the mainland near Narragansett and Block Island is a one hour ferry ride out into the sea.  It’s so fun all summer. As the kids are swimming and splashing the ferry pulls in and out all day long.  We all stop and wave to the travelers off to enjoy their vacations. And then finally it’s our turn.

There is nothing swanky, sporty or even very attractive about the beat up old Block Island Ferry boat.  But that boat to many of us, has become a timeless symbol.  It’s a symbol of a gateway. A vessel that transports you from the everyday to the magical.  Away from your laundry, mowing, bill paying, dusting and vacuuming and brings you to relaxation, good times, good friends and beautiful beaches.

Man, I’m so ready!

But aww…. It’s 4 1/2 months away.  I’d guess I’d better unpack my bathing suit :(
