Greetings! I have been wanting to do this for some time, but I keep pushing it off into the future…
Andrea, the owner of South County Art Supply, has been offering to host art classes if ever I was willing to teach them. “Oh yeah, I’d love to” I continuously say…but not now…not during my 365…how about next year…excuses, excuses, excuses!
If I am being completely honest, It’s because I’m afraid.
Scared of teaching? No. I’ve taught many an art class over the years.
Really, what it comes down to is being a perfectionist. I already have the itinerary in my head, but I’m afraid I won’t have time to get all my thoughts out perfectly onto a piece of paper, create a real lesson plan, create check lists, map out each entire class from beginning to end, create the projects beforehand to make sure they even work….Man I could come up with a hundred different fears about being “ready” or “prepared”.
I do like to be prepared, but I also know that I pass up art exhibits, events, teaching, you name it, because I am afraid the conditions aren’t perfect. I never feel like it’s the right time to PUT MYSELF OUT THERE – EVER!
As my mom said today, “No one likes to be pushed outside of their comfort zone” and it’s so true, I can be the biggest baby.
So what I thought I’d do for today was commit to a date and a time, and put it out there. I’ll have to work with Andrea on the particulars, but once again, I have at least made a public decree which to me, is enough to make me follow through.
If I have that date, then I will work towards my goal, and somehow I will be prepared and ready to go. That is how the universe works…

Ahhhhhhhh!
I hope you post some of these lessons. I’d love to see what kids create. I just started a class on Picasso portraits with my grade 2/3 class. They’re loving it.
