Many, many months ago I told you I had an idea…
But I never told you the idea…
I thought I’d show you the finished project but somehow, as usual, weeks turn into months!
I have this big black box of a fireplace insert. It’s way too much black for my cheery décor. So I had the idea to make tiles in my pottery class and attach them to the metal fireplace surround with magnets. This way if I ever move, I can take them off and spare the next homeowner from what I deemed to be “gorgeous”. Let’s face it, all humans disagree on that one! Also, the fact that the fireplace is black becomes a perfect solution for the “appearance” of grout.
Of course I haven’t finished. I need to make roughly 40 more tiles, but if I waited until that happened, I might very well have forgotten to show you my great idea!
Obviously you could take any tile and create a fun fireplace back splash. If I were to do it again, instead of one giant magnet in the middle, I’d put 4 tiny magnets in each corner. This way they wouldn’t spin like my tiles are apt to do.
Oh well, my tiles wiggling and spinning seems perfectly apropos. Everything else in the house always seems to be wiggling and spinning…and cracking…and peeling… you know being a house!
Good luck. Let’s all keep working at making this world creative! What are you up to?
Freakin’ brilliant (and beautiful).
gorgeous !! you are an inspiration, mary. i just watched a clip about treating my house, and all that is in it, as a living being — and loving it !! hello, my dear wiggling, spinning, cracking, peeling….house !!
By the way, share the clip about treating your house on our Artist’s way page…I’d love to see it!

Judith I see your house as a “doll house”. I don’t know about you, but I spent hours as a kid, arranging furniture, setting the table, creating my dream bedroom in my head… Even then, I saw a house as this special place where you could try things out. Try new colors, introduce plants & flowers, fabrics, move around furniture. As you might have gathered, nothing stays in one place in my house for very long. Bring back that kid like enjoyment of “playing” with your doll house…there is unlimited possibilities…and if you ever want a playmate, I love to play with other peoples doll houses too! Think of your front porch. What a special little room that could be… coffee in the morning, mojitos at night…string up a few twinkle lights… And your living room… what a cozy space… your fireplace says “warmth” and “hearth” .. it’s the rooms shrine… Your meditation/session room… put your passions in there. Put all the symbolism that embodies you in there. Make it a place you never want to leave… Then when we visit, we can feel your loving presence from the second we walk in…. are you sensing I could go on and on….! :)
That looks AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL!! I think this is the best yet!
You are very kind friend!
